A sharp electrical or hot-metal smell points to a failing blower motor, a scorched control board, or loose wiring at a connection. Melting plastic points to wire insulation or a housing contacting something hot. A persistent oily or smoky smell can indicate a cracked heat exchanger or improper combustion. In each case, turn the thermostat off, shut the breaker, and stop running the system until it has been inspected.
